Keratin Treatment

Created By Nature has post this wonderful article on our Facebook page and I wanted to share this with everyone! I know some people have heard of it, but not everyone. I wanted to shine some light on this treatment.

I am a licensed cosmetologist that functions solely as a natural stylist. So understand that this is my view on this service.

To begin Keratin is the protein that is found in the hair, skin and nails. The purpose of protein as a conditiner; is to fill in missing Keratin bonds to strengthen the hair (and help prevent breakage and shedding) As stated protein is to make the hair strong, not to smooth or straighten.  Protein can be found in cream forms (milder) and liquid (very aggressive) once it is applied to the hair, and it sits for 15-25 min (with heat or steam) Protein will stay on the hair for 6-12 weeks. Understand protein is a treatment, and because its purpose is to make the hair strong, it should not be done too often (too much protein can actually dry the hair and cause breakage)
Saying this, I began to research this product.   I kept asking companies what is the “Catalyst” in this product what is making the hair smooth (because this is not what Keratin does).  Of course, I got a lot of run around.  After looking into it some more I discovered “Formaldehyde" (a preservative and the main chemical found in embalming fluid) Yes, this is the catalyst and “smoothing” agent that is found in the “Keratin Treatment”.  Now of course they offer this treatment with lower % of Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde free ( but of course it is not as effective)

So you have this chemical added with Keratin, that can dry out your hair if used improperly; which in this case is so.  This service is done in the following way.  Applied to the hair, blow dried into the hair, flat ironed into the hair and the the hair cannot be shampooed for 48-72 hrs in order for the service to work effectively.  I have seen first hand from clients who have used this "treatment" and it has destroyed their hair.  Whether it has caused breakage or permanently altered the wave pattern.   There are so many reasons, why I would stay clear of this; the main thing is the health and integrity of your hair and your body.

This was the first video I watched when I researched Keratin Treatment. Reniece has a wonderful YouTube channel come check it out  http://www.youtube.com/user/RenieceHairTV

Baby N's Hairstyles: Island Gal

I just noticed that I never displayed N's baby hairstyles. Every now, and then, I will show some baby photos of N. But please keep in mind, that for N as a toddler/baby I kept it simple. I didn't start doing cornrows in her hair until she was 4 or 5 years old.

Okay, this photo I didn't quite do her hair LOL. But she looks great in dreds..no? haaha

She loved this hat from Jamaica, and loved wearing it around her Grandparents house.

Look Ma! I Did My Sister's Hair

My son L who is 21 months old, wanted to help me do N's hair. He loves attention and doesn't want to feel left out during hair time lol. He loves to go through her hair bows and make a mess, but today he helped me out...well...sort of.

He placed 3 orange bows on top of her hair. N clapped for him, she decided to walk around like this to showcase his style lol. But the bows fell off within minutes :(

-Does your child help you during hair time?

SpotLight: Kim & Laina

1.) Your name and little one's name/nickname?

My name is Kim and my gorgeous niece's name is Laina or Diva A or Barbie. I am 25 and recent college graduate w/my A.S. in ultrasound. Diva is 8 and in the 3rd grade.
She is a total girly, and plans on staying like that. We also have our very own blog with youcandoittoo2.blogspot.com

2.) What's your child's hair care routine?

We don't really have a big hair care routine. I wash her hair twice a week, and co-wash it once a week. At night I tend to put it in braids, or pony tails, so it will not be tangled in the mornings.

3.) What products are you currently using?

I use a leave in conditioner called, Hi Image which is made with olive oil. We use a Kid's Organic Olive gel and Suave Shampoo and Conditioner for her washes.

4.) Do you use (or will or will not use) heat/chemicals on the child's hair?

No, I will not use chemicals, but every once in awhile I use the blow dry, or my wet-to-straight straightener on her.

5.) Do you use heat/chemicals on your hair?

Yes, when I was younger I've had my hair permed, and I do blow dry and straighten my hair. But I use an olive oil base heat protector that works really well.

6.) What was the worst hair tip you have received?

I don't think I ever got any yet.

7.) Do you cut/trim the hair? if so how often?

Every 3 to 5 months.

8.) What is some hair advice you would like to share?

Never ever give up!! Practice makes perfect. Anyone can do hair if they want too :)

Show us the pictures!!!!!

Stop Touching My Hair!

I shared this story on our facebook page, and received alot of feedback and I wanted to share it with you too. We are a pretty chatty bunch, come follow us, so you wont miss the action.

In the car ride home from school a few days ago. N told me that a classmate named Ja'Zaria (?) keeps touching her hair! N told me that she has touched her hair 100 times since school began (N can be a little overly dramatic.) N says she has told the girl "No" and "Stop it!" and has even told the teacher, who also told the child to stop. But later on during the day, or the next day, she does it again. I wrote a note to the teacher in N's agenda about this, and asked that the teacher talk with the child, about keeping her hands to herself. Since then, I ask daily if the anyone has touched her hair, and N says "no"...thank goodness!

My question is has this happened to you or your child? Could N's hairstyles be a distraction? Could this be a form of bullying? How would you handle this situation? and how would you handle it, if it occurs again?

2nd Day Of School Hairstyle: Braidout Pigtails

For the second day of school, I decided to make a cute braidout pigtails. It was very simple.
I just made a straight part going down her hair. Then I wet the hair with my spray of water&conditioner mixed. I also added Darcy's Botanical's Shea Butter Moisturizing Cream. I made 2 braids in her hair. In the morning, I unraveled the braids and gently separated her curls.

I also added Darcy's Botanicals Coconut & Hibiscus Oil Spray for shine. If you don't know by now, Darcy is now added to our routine! I absolutely love it! Want another chance to win some? Click here Darcy's Botanicals is having a contest, it ends Sept 16th.

Hair Myth Busters

Growing up I always heard from my family, especially my Mom and Grandma, a ton of Hair Myths. At the time, I believed each one! Once I began researching about natural hair care. I found out, that many of the things I thought were true, we in fact, not true. I created a list of some of the things that I heard.

1.) You should always frequently cut your hair, in order for it to grow longer.

2.) If you use a hot comb, on relaxed hair, it will fall out.

3.) If you leave the house with wet hair, you will catch a cold.

4.) Brush your hair 100 times a day, and it will help it grow.

5.)Your hair will fall out, if there is more than 2 people doing your hair at the same time.

6.) A pregnant woman doing your hair will help your hair grow.
(Somehow her hormones helps you??)

7.) Washing your hair frequently, will result with your hair falling out.

8.) If you don't grease your scalp every few days, you hair will be dry and will fall out.

9.) You can never have healthy hair with a relaxer.

10.) Don't relax your hair more than every 3 months, if you do your hair will fall out.

11.) Never have a young person style or wash your hair, because they do not know what they are doing.

12.) Don't comb your hair while wet, it fragile and will break.

13.) Do not leave conditioner in for too long.

14.) Most recently, a Man doing your hair will help it grow.

Crazy, huh? To this day my Mom still believes alot of these myths. She reads my blog, so since she doesn't believe me, hopefully your comments will let her know the truth LOL.
What are some myths that you heard?

SpotLight- Nevaeh

1.) Your name and little one's name/nickname.
My name is Sophia and my princess name is
Nevaeh also known as "vayvay" to others and "my stinking honey cakes " to me :-).

2.) What is your hair care routine?
I shampoo her hair once maybe twice a month. I cowash it once a week. Meaning, I only wash it using conditioner, a deep conditioner and a leave in conditioner. I try not to wash out the oils because her hair gets really dry.

3.) What products are you currently using?
Right now, I'm using Mixed Chicks Leave-in and Deep Conditioner, Miss Jessie's Super Sudsy Shampoo and Curly Pudding Creme. I use a few other Miss Jessie's Cremes but Curly Pudding is my fave :-) .

4.) Do you use (or will or will not use) heat/chemicals on the child's hair?
I do use heat once in a while to blow dry her hair, when I do some of her twist for twist outs. But most of the time after washing, I do wet twist or nubian knots. I am never using a chemical in her hair I love her curls :-).  When she gets older it will be her choice, but hope she will never want to.

5.) Do you use heat or chemicals in your hair?
Yes I do, I get a relaxer once a month! Then I blow dry my hair, and use bevelers to curl it. I got my first perm when I was 5! Yes I know most people will think that's bad, but my mom said my hair was too curly and wouldn't hold styles, or bows, they just kept sliding off. But she went to hair school and knew what she was doing, so mine was fine and well taken care of :-). She still do it til this day lol love you Mom!!!!!

6.) What was the worst hair tip you have received?
Actually I haven't received any, I'm usually the one giving out hair tips lol. I hope all my tips helps other moms though. I went to hair school, so I don't really ask for hair tips, I think I know a great deal of things :-).

7.) Do you cut/trim the hair? If so how often?
I have never cut, or trimmed her hair, I'm thinking about doing before she starts kindergarten for the first time.

8.) What is some hair advice you will like to share?
Hmmmmm I'll say try not to shampoo too much, your stripping the hair of it's natural oils which causes it to be dry, keep the hair moisturized, don't use rubberbands they break the hair off, and use wide tooth combs :-)

Thanks so much for those hair tips! You're not alone, I'm a relaxed Momma too! But I'm glad we are taking steps towards keeping our daughter's natural as long as possible. Nevaeh is such a beautiful girl and her curls are Fab-u-lous!!! I wish I could steal her lol!
