Cornrow Style: With Zig-Zag Parts

This week we had family visiting from out of town. I wanted to do a style that wasn't too time consuming, but still very cute. N wanted cornbraids, so instead of having cornbraids throughout her entire hair, I decided to just do the top half.

Instructions:

1.) I divided the hair in half (ear to ear.)

2.) Beginning with the top section, I made two zig-zag parts.

3.) Next, I made a cornbraid using the hair in the middle of the zig-zag parts.

4.) I continued making zig-zag parts, and braiding the hair in the middle, until I have completed 5 braids.

5.) On the sides of the hair, I made 6 small box sections ,and added pink rubberbands to each section.

6.) Then, I gathered all of the left over hair, and began making one big two-strand twist.

7.) In the back section, I put the hair into a ponytail.

8.) Finally, I made two braids and added a blue butterfly clip.

Repost: Swimming & Hair Care

The Sun is out, and summer is on it's way! Of course, the kids want to cool off in the water.
Here are some tips on how to protect your little one's hair while swimming.

Before Swimming:

-Apply a leave in conditioner to the hair. This will add a protective barrier against chlorine/salt.

- Purchase a swimming cap, this will also protect the hair.

-Wet your hair with clean water prior to going into the pool, this will help to stop your hair from absorbing chlorine.

After Swimming:

This is the most important step
-Make sure to immediately wash your hair with a sulfate shampoo to remove the chlorine and apply a conditioner.

Interview with Celebrity Hairstylist And Creator of Tara Smith Product Line-Tara Smith

Tara Smith is one of the most vibrant, innovative and well-respected celebrity hairstylists in the industry. She has showcased her prowess through an extensive range of notable projects and works with many famous faces both on and off set including: Marisa Tomei, Demi Moore, Rosario Dawson, Neve Campbell, Lucy Liu, Patricia Arquette, Anna Friel, Lindsay Lohan, Adrienne Grenier, Sting and Matthew McConaughey, to name a few. Tara also works in film where her recent credits includes her latest and third film with Demi Moore Happy Tears, Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse and Sex & The City: The Movie (LA Leg); as well as editorial in titles such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. To add to her impressive accolades, Tara was recently named the "2009 Celebrity Hairstylist of the Year" in the UK and was also honored as the 2009 Celebrity Hairdresser winner for the Clothes Show Style Awards. Today, her extensive experience and unique skills have led her to a glittering global career as one of the most soughtafter hair stylists in the world!

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tara Smith, Celebrity Hairstylist and Creator and Founder of Tara Smith Product Line.

Tara continues to flourish and make her mark in the international hair community by releasing her own line of hair products that will truly revolutionize the hair care industry.

How long have you been styling hair?

Professionally for 20 years, but in my fantasy’s since I was 3 or 4 years old, growing up in my mother’s salon and watching all of the ladies in a row under the hairdryers, it all seemed so glamorous- I always like to say I was born with a comb in my hand!

What made you want to produce your own line of hair products?

Living a healthy lifestyle is very important to me, and as I became more aware of the chemicals that are in most beauty products, and how expensive chemical free, natural products are- I had to do something about it! I made it my mission to develop a line of products that are healthy and free of nasty chemicals, that everyone could afford. And as I am in the industry and work with celebrities whose job it is to look good- the products had to perform too, and mine do.

What made you choose to use natural organic ingredients versus using chemicals?

Because 1 in 3 women get cancer, and 1 in 5 men get cancer, and we need to wake up. It is not enough to just watch what you put into your body- we need to watch what we put on to our body just as closely. More than 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream, and you would not rub those chemicals into your scalp if you knew what you were exposing yourself and your family to.

Who are some of the celebrities you have worked with?

Demi Moore, Rosario Dawson, Nicole Kidman, Lucy Liu, Lindsay Lohan, Marisa Tomei, Neve Campbell...

What celebrity would you like to work with in the future?

Madonna, Tina Turner, Rihanna....

Whats you favorite hair tool?

I love the Ego Hairdryer and diffuser, which stands for Every Girls Obsession. It is super light and uses tourmaline components that are not as damaging to the hair and it gives a brilliant blow dry.

Who is your biggest inspiration in life?

Tina Turner! She is such an amazing woman and spirit and I have always admired her. She never gave up and always believed in herself and that kind of determination inspires me.

Tell us about your current and upcoming projects?

Working on the next generation of Tara Smith products, and developing more styling products to add to the line. Also researching cleaner and greener packaging, and working on making my company carbon neutral in 2011. In between travelling for bookings with my clients and my work for charity. I just ran a ½ marathon in New York for Shoe4Africa- a brilliant cause that is working to build the first children’s hospital in East Africa, which is desperately needed. To donate and find out more go to www.shoe4africa.org

Any advice to the mothers on KandyLandKurls, who have kids with curly hair (when it comes to hair maintenance?)

Well this I know very well as I have a head full of curls myself! Make sure that you use a wide tooth comb to detangle, I love the smooth wooden ones, and comb when hair is properly conditioned, all hair needs good conditioning. And you could try my C Curls shampoo and conditioner- it enhances curls, tames frizz and is super hydrating - developed just for curly hair.

Thank you so much Tara for allowing KandyLandKurls to interview you. To learn more about Tara Smith's product line and to read about her upcoming projects please visit http://www.tarasmith.com/

Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk
Ingredients:
Nucifera (coconut) oil (denotes certified organic ingredients), Isopropyl Myristate, sugar starch, silk protein, essential oil blend, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) seed oil, Caprylyl glycol, Sorbitol Esters, algae extract, Hyssopus Officinalis Extract, Salvia Officinalis (sage) leaf and Equisetum Arvense Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (carrot) seed oil, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower and Lonicera Japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract and Tocopherol (vitamin E).

I washed, deep conditioned, and applied the Smoothie and Style Milk to N's hair. I put her hair into 4 braids, and sent her to bed with her satin scarf. In the morning, I took out her braids, I noticed the curl definition right away. I pulled the top half into a ponytail and added a headband.

Take a look at the bottom of her hair, I must say, the curls are gorgeous. This picture was taken after running and playing at the park, and her curls still looked great!

Overall, I was pleased with the braid out, and the ingredients are perfect! But, these products didn't moisturize her hair the way I thought it would. There wasn't extra shine, if you take a look at the pictures her hair appears dull/dry. But to solve that, I added a oil/sealant on top of the Shea Mositure Milk. They do carry a shine mist, but my local Walgreens did not have it. I will keep you updated, on these products.

UPDATE: Well it's almost been a year, since writing this review. Since then, I purchased the Shea Moisture Milk and Shampoo again. I wasn't too fond of the Deep Conditiong Mask, so I will not repurchase it. But I love the Milk and Shampoo, and also I got my hands on the Shine Mist, which I also love! I really hope Walgreens has another BOGO sale, if so, I'll be right there, ready and equipped to purchase in bulk haha! But at my most recent shopping trip to Walmart, Shea Moisture was in the aisle! I can't believe it! and you guessed it, I brought some more bottles lol.

What's in my shampoo? Part-Two (Parabens)

For the past few months, I have been trying to understand what those big fancy ingredients on the back of regular hair care products, actually mean. Before I started to research,  I would judge a product by the price (yes, Im semi-frugal) lol. But recently I'm starting to realize there is more to a product than the price, smell, or pretty decorations on the bottle. I need to know exactly what is going in my hair.

After looking at regular bottles of shampoo, I kept seeing the ingredients methylparaben, propylparaben, benzylparaben and butylparaben,” they all end in “paraben.” I found out, parabens are a kind of preservative used in cosmetics and shampoos. Parabens are even used in some foods and medicines. Paraben is a very controversal ingredient, it has been linked to breast cancer. A 2004 study showed traces of 5 parabens in cancerous breast tumors. Although the study did not prove the parabens caused the cancer, parabens are capable of remaining intact in human tissue, and are not necessarily excreted from the body quickly and easily. There is no limit on the amount of parabens that manufacturers can use in shampoos, the amount is not regulated.

I'm not trying to scare anyone, or start a huge debate. I just want to be more conscious of what I use on my skin and hair. Also, I want to inform others, so that once we understand what these ingredients mean, we will make better decisions.

Braids And A Twisted Bun

N had picture day for the second time this year. I needed to do something sort-of fast since we have a busy day ahead. I added a few cornbraids in the front of her hair. Then I made a bunch of two strand twists and pinned them into a bun.

Instructions:

1.) Part the hair ear to ear. (almost all of my styles I part ear to ear lol)

2.) Starting with the top section, begin making 2 cornbraids on the side of her hair, closest to her ear.

3.) Follow step #2 (number 2) on the other side of the hair.

4.) On the rest of the hair on top, I made 3 braids.

5.)One braid going towards the Left, and 2 braids going towards the Right.

6.) Next, on the bottom section, put the hair into a ponytail.

7.) Begin making (pinky finger-sized) 2 strand twists.

8.) Once you have the ponytail full of twists, use black bobby pins, to pin the hair into a bun shape.

9.) Finally, I added a few beads to the braids on the top section, and pulled the two braids (near her ears) into the bun.

Approx Time: 45-55 mins.
