Mini Twists

Yup you got it, we are back to mini twists, our new favorite protective style. All this month we will be participating in BeadsBraidsBeyond Protective Style Challenge, I must say it came at the perfect time! I plan on keeping N's hair in protective styles throughout the summer. Last time I did mini twists, well they weren't as small as this time.

(Click on the photo to enlarge)

On Sunday, I washed, deep conditioned, blowdried (on cool) and banded her hair into 5 sections. I began creating small mini twists within each section. We started her hair around 1:00 ish, and finished at 8:30. Longest ever! I usually wash and prep the hair the night before styling. But I did everything in one shot. I plan to keep these in for 3 weeks.

Products Used:
Shea Moisture Shampoo
Blended Beauty Herbal Reconditioner
Giovanni Direct Leave In
Shea Butter Mix
Eco Styler Gel
(maintenance throughout the week)
Cara B Naturally Leave In
Blended Beauty Hair Oil

The Protective Style Challenge is over, it's been a long 2 months. I was totally shocked at how much we learned and helped one another. I was even more shocked when many of the Women noticed an inch or more of growth in their child's hair...How cool is that! The main purpose of this challenge was to achieve healthier hair so the mission was accomplished!!
Random.org has selected 12 winners!
The lucky ladies are:
Natica

and I gave a special award to the women who kept her child's hair in a protective style throughout the entire challenge: Tanaja

The challenge has been over for awhile now, but we have bonded through this challenge and decided to leave the group open. So if you would like to join us in our love for hair here is the link to enter the group http://www.facebook.com/groups/302862096422177/

Product Review: Beija Flor Naturals Creme Brulee

We received the Beija Flor Naturals Creme Brulee For Kinks Curls And Coils, thanks to our friends from Beija Flor!

This product is for the happy and nappy, cute and coily, wild and wavy, kinky, curly...well you get the picture! No matter what your ethnic background, if the hair that sits on top of your head can be described as such you know that highly textured hair in all its glory tends to be dry, brittle and prone to breakage.

Ingredients: Herbal Complex (Nettle, Burdock, Rosemary, Mashmellow Root). Organic Shea Butter, Aloe Butter, Murumuru Butter, Organic Aloe Vera Extract, Grapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Vegetable Emulsifier, Stearic Acid, Xanthum, Vitamin E Paraben Free Preservative, Fragrance.

Review: I received the Creme Brulee For Kinks Curls And Coils. It's a very thick creme, and smells like peppermint. After I applied to N's hair, she kept sniffing her hair (weirdo child) hahaha. But it did make her hair smell so lovely. I used the creme as a styling product for our braids.

It's a good holding product, as soon as I applied it on a section for the twists, it clumped her section together. Making it easy to twist her hair, so I didn't have to worry it unraveling. I love it, and I plan on doing many more styles with this. I recommend Creme Brulee on hair that loves very thick products. Even though N's hair is mostly 3C her hair loves thick cremes and heavy products. I will definitely use this again very soon. You can visit their site at http://beijaflornaturals.bigcartel.com/

Protective Style Challenge: Mini Twists (Week 5-7)

With only a week left, we are almost finished with the Protective Style Challenge. I, along with a few other Mama's, have openly admitted that we are starting to REALLY enjoy not styling our kids hair daily. We somewhat became "Lazy" lol. But we do maintain the hairstyle by adding moisture and oil.

I decided to do mini twists again, so that I won't have to style her hair for a few weeks. We really enjoyed the first time we did the twists, and I think we will continue doing this style throughout the year. The mini twists last a lot longer than cornbraids and regular braids. The twists seem to hide the frizz alot better than braids.

I pre-pooed, washed, conditioned, air dried and stretched, her hair a day before styling. While styling the twists, I used Bee Mine Curly Butter mixed with Eco Styler Gel for hold. I moisturized daily with Cara B Naturally Leave In, and Blended Beauty Oil.

How is your Little One rocking their hair this week?

Protective Style Challenge: Update (Week 4-5)

We are half way done with the Protective Style Challenge!! Can you believe that? N had her hair in this style (click to see.) During the week we spiced up that same hairstyle, and added some flair. She rocked a twisted updo, and little buns, along with one long braid (which is not pictured.)

-Ignore the frizzies-

The women in the challenge are doing such amazing styles! And are helping each other with tips, styles, and  much more. It feels like a mini facebook family lol.
We also shared photos of our children's length check. I never measured N's hair before, so it was pretty cool to see how long it is. I plan on measuring again when the challenge is over, to see if we have any growth.

-sorry it's blurry, but I copied the rulers number in white font.-

-It's pretty difficult to take a pic and hold the ruler & hair haha-

Shrinkage is CRAZY! I never would of thought that her hair was almost 19 inches when stretched.

Have you ever measured your child's hair? Where you shocked by the results?

Protective Style Challenge: Mini Twists (weeks 1-3)

For our Protective Style Challenge we decided to do ....mini twists!
Yes, mini twists! If you ask some of my facebook friends, they will tell you how much
I dreaded doing this style. It's a beautiful style, but I did not want to sit for hours, and hours, and I didn't even want to think about the take down process. Well, I caved in, and surprisingly it wasn't too bad after all!

(fyi: the last photo is from week 2)
Here are some close up pictures.

This style took 3-4 hours we only had a few breaks. I started her hair in the back, I didn't part it, just sectioned it with my fingers. I washed her hair 2 days before styling and banded it. I used Eco Styler Gel mixed with Bee Mine Curly Butter for hold. For some reason I really like mixing the two products. The Eco Styler alone sometimes leaves a white flaky residue but has a really good hold.

But on the down side, the two products combined makes N's hair wet, and then once the twists dries it creates this kinda-cute-weird-crinkly-thingy <--ignore all of that...But it did create this curly look. Overall N said "Mommy, this is my favorite hairstyle!" Yes, her favorite, so you guessed it, we will be seeing more of this style lol.

Here is a tutorial video on how to do Mini Twists, I pretty much followed her directions.

Have you ever tried mini twists? If so, how was your experience?
