Winning The Hair Battle!

After talking with many Mom's, especially the Mom's with small children. I often hear about the battle, you know, the HAIR BATTLE. Between your busy, impatient toddler and hair time. I honestly didn't have a struggle with N's hair when she was smaller. But I did battle with my son. I put together 7 tips to help you win!

1.) Start the daily hair care while they are young. This is very important! Just like brushing teeth, or getting dressed, hair maintenance should be just as important. This is mandatory, not optional. If you do this everyday, they will gradually get used to hair time and expect it.

2.) Treats!! Now this doesn't mean "junk food" but give your child some type of treat during hair time. Whether it's fruit, popsicles, or cereal. Keeping their mouths full, will help stop them from yelling. (It's kind of hard to do both at the same time lol.)

3.) Nap time! If your child sleeps hard like a rock, this is the perfect time to grab a comb and begin a style. But I must warn you, it takes a bit of skill to be able to part the hair, and have a good enough angle to see what you are doing.

4.) Tv time! In our house, tv time is a privilege. Homework & chores must be complete in order to watch tv. So when I pop in a movie, or turn to cartoons, this is a good time to grab a comb and start styling. They are so happy that the tv is on, they won't care that your styling their hair. If your child fusses, the tv comes off! This will help them to understand that, you can have what you want (tv) if I get what I want (hair time.) Also when I braid N's hair (which sometimes takes approx 1-2 hours) Tv makes the perfect distraction. The movie is over and so is Mommy.

5.) Watch other kids during hair time. Monkey see, monkey do. I'm not calling your kid a monkey lol. But sometimes, if kids see others being "brave" or a "big girl." It influences them to want to be good, like the other child. Search and find some Youtube videos of kids getting their hair done. Make sure to point out how still and well-behaved they are being, when they are getting their hair done. This may help your child learn how to copy and behave.

6.) Giving them a job. Sometimes doing things as a team, motivates them to participate during hair time. Kids always want to feel apart of something. So if it's sorting the hair bows, or holding the brush or etc, this will show them that they are apart of the hair process. Makes them feel important, and they will like this feeling.

7.) Frequent breaks. Make sure to take plenty of breaks while styling their hair. Don't expect them to sit still for 30 minutes straight while you detangle. Work quickly, and take time to read or color, this will make them happy and give your fingers a break.

Hair Care Tips for kids with Ethnic Hair.
When it comes to your child you want nothing but the best from the top of their heads down to their toes and everything in between. However, in today's world you may not have the money to take your child to a professionally on a regular basic.  Here are my tips, as a licensed Cosmetologist and mother of two girls, on how to care for Ethnic Kid's hair.

Ethnic hair comes in all types and textures but have should be cared for the same way.
Tip 1. Weekly shampoos with an alcohol free shampoo, its first line of defense is caring for any kind of hair. Educate yourself. Read the labels and ingredients in the shampoos, know what you are using. Alcohol is very damaging to the hair and can cause unnecessary dryness and breakage. The cheaper the shampoo is the more likely its made of mostly water and alcohol.

Tip 2. Condition, use a Conditioner that’s not heavy and doesn't weigh the hair down, Leave in conditioners are great as long as it isn't greasy and of course alcohol free as well. When applying the Conditioner make sure you cover every strand form root to ends and even scalp. If it is not a Leave in, just let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes and rinse with warm water. Carol's Daughter makes a great line of hair care products for all types of kid's hair, made naturally with no Alcohol.

Tip 3.Clipping the dead-ends should also be preformed every 6 to 8 weeks but only by a professional. You always want to start with a clean oil free head. If your baby is tender headed or the hair gets tangled easily spray a light mist of detangler before you start the cut comb out. Use a wide toothcomb. It will save you both the tears. Part the hair in four sections; it’s easier to do if you tackle a section a time. Starting at the back right section comb the ends first while holding the middle of the section, if it still tangled can spray more detangler as need. Comb the whole section from root to end without kinks or knots. Repeat until you have combed out all four sections.

-You do a wonderful job, your daughters hair looks absolutely luscious! I cant wait to see more styles, and future articles from you.

Curly Hair Care Tips

Shampoo: Its recommended to wash the hair every 7-10 days, washing it more than that can dry out the hair. Co-wash the hair on those messy days (ex. sand in the hair, kids are kids lol). When shampooing make sure to use the balls of your finger instead of nails, scratching the scalp can irritate the scalp. When choosing a product, try to avoid shampoos which contain lauryl sulfate. This ingredient is designed to strip the natural oils in the hair and wasnt designed for ver curly hair.

Conditioner: ALWAYS CONDITION AFTER YOU SHAMPOO!!
Shampoo helps keep the hair soft and healthy. There are 2 types of conditioners.
Instant Conditioner- It comes in a "rinse out" and "leave-in" form. Both forms are good, it all depends on the need of the child's hair.
Deep Conditioner- Is absorbed into the hair to impove the apperance. This type should be used at each wash for hair that is damanged or exposed to chlorine and used once a month, for hair thats not damanaged. Allow the deep conditioner to stay in the hair for at least 15 minutes before rinsing.

Detangling: Its best to detange the hair in sections using a widetooth comb, make sure to hold the hair firmly at the root and begin combing at the ends of the hair working your way up.

Moisturizer: After all the hair has been combed through make sure to apply moisture to the hair use a oil that melts into the hair. Some of the best oils to use are sage, olive, rosemary, lavender and almond. Avoid using lanolin, petroleum and mineral oils, because they may clog the pores and attract dust and dirt. if hair is unable to breathe the natural hair process may slow down.

Infant Hair Care: Infants require special, but simple, hair care. Whether a baby has lots of hair or very little, a baby’s scalp is fragile and the hair follicles are still developing, so the baby’s hair and scalp need gentle care. A baby’s hair and scalp can be cleaned with a washcloth and a natural, mild baby shampoo. It should then be rinsed with luke-warm water. A baby’s hair should typically not be washed more than once a week. A small amount of oil should then be applied to the hair, brushing it with a soft-bristle baby brush. When choosing an oil, you want something that is very light and natural. Choose a product that contains herbs, olive oil and other natural ingredients (e.g. aloe, sage oil, olive oil, almond, lavender, rosemary and castor oils). Avoid products that could clog the pores, such as Vaseline.

I hope this info helps :-)
