Protective Style Challenge: Mini Twists (Week 5-7)

With only a week left, we are almost finished with the Protective Style Challenge. I, along with a few other Mama's, have openly admitted that we are starting to REALLY enjoy not styling our kids hair daily. We somewhat became "Lazy" lol. But we do maintain the hairstyle by adding moisture and oil.

I decided to do mini twists again, so that I won't have to style her hair for a few weeks. We really enjoyed the first time we did the twists, and I think we will continue doing this style throughout the year. The mini twists last a lot longer than cornbraids and regular braids. The twists seem to hide the frizz alot better than braids.

I pre-pooed, washed, conditioned, air dried and stretched, her hair a day before styling. While styling the twists, I used Bee Mine Curly Butter mixed with Eco Styler Gel for hold. I moisturized daily with Cara B Naturally Leave In, and Blended Beauty Oil.

How is your Little One rocking their hair this week?

Product Review: Pretty Puff Dolls

One of our amazing sponsors for the Protective Style Challenge is Pretty Puff Dolls

Pretty Puffs were born in 2002 as a result of the challenges that many minorities face when attempting to purchase dolls with ethnic characteristics. Plush in design, what distinguishes Pretty Puffs from similar dolls is its unique style of hair, styled into afro-puff pony tails. In general the market has been reluctant to include dolls of such distinction and characteristics, Pretty Puffs are made to show minority girls, teens, and women that being different, having brown skin and kinky hair is absolutely a thing of beauty.

Review: The Pretty Puff Doll came in a purple little pouch, and she smelled so good. Yes, I smelled the doll...please don't ask...Anywho, I removed her from the pouch and felt her hair. I was so shocked that the doll hair has such a curly thick texture. She is dressed so cute! I placed the doll on her vanity. When N came home from school, she noticed her right away and said she smells good....we are both odd...but seriously, I think they spray her with something.
I asked N to pick a name for her. She decided to name her "Whitney" yes, after Whitney Houston lol. We watched her funeral together, so she now is a fan of Whitney. After Michael Jackson died, she became a fan of him as well. Okay back on topic lol, she loves Whitney and keeps her on her vanity. In the mornings when I'm doing her hair, she plays with Whitney. It helps to keep her head still.

She loves Whitney, can't you tell by the smile!

Product Review: Curls Of The World

We were given the opportunity to try Curls Of The World! I read two wonderful reviews and was eager to try them! Thank you Curls Of The World For allowing us to review your line.

At Curls of the World, we celebrate wavy, curly, coily hair from around the world. We believe that it is important that you nurture every precious strand with 100% natural ingredients. Our team has searched the globe to find ingredients that will help you nourish, retain and grow long, lovely curls. We offer you 100% natural products that are free of silicone, parabens, lauryl sulfate and synthetic preservatives.

Georgia Peach Moisturizing Shampoo

Ingredients: Saponified oils of Avocado, Borage, Castor, Coconut, Evening Primrose, Palm, Sesame, Safflower, Sweet Almond Oil, Aloe Vera Oil, Saponfied butters of Cocoa and Shea.
Vegetable Glycerin, Lavendar Essential Oil, Carrageenan, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Silver Citrate, Natural Fresh Peach Fragance.

Review: This shampoo smells so lovely just like peaches, yummy! I love fruit scented products, so that was a BIG plus! I started with a half dollar amount of shampoo, and rubbed it into her hair. Within seconds the suds vanished. I went and applied more shampoo, and scrubbed her hair. Again, the shampoo vanished, it soaked right into her hair. Well I continued adding shampoo, and quickly tried to wash her hair. I ended up using more than half the bottle. But when I rinsed it out, her hair was nice and clean.

Manzanilla Coconut Moisturizing Conditioner

Ingredients: Aloe Vera Whole Leaf Juice (Organic), Avocado Oil, Citric Acid, DL Panthenol,
Emulsifying wax, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Oat Protein, Palm Steari Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Safflower Oil, Rosemary Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter, Silk Protein, Silver Citrate, Vitamin E, Water, Wheat Germ Oil and Natural Coconut fragrance oil.

Review: It smells like coconut! I absolutely love coconut scent. I received a small bottle, and well, I used the entire bottle in one wash. N's hair soaked it right in, I took this picture while I let the product sit.

Her hair has the entire bottle of conditioner in it, but you cannot see it, again it soaked right into her hair. There was no way I could detangle with it, so I rinsed it out. And there was barely any product being removed when I washed it out.

Just the Flax Curl Defining Gel

Ingredients: Flaxseed Gel, Aloe Vera Juice, Glycerin, Rosemary Oil, Rose Essential Oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract,
Potassium Sorbate (a natural preservative)

After two products not working in N's hair, I decided to try all of the products on my son. His hair is finer, and has spiral curls, so I thought maybe it would work better. I applied the shampoo, our regular conditioner (since I ran out of the other one.) followed by the The Curls Of The World Gel. I then styled his hair in finger curls, the gel has a nice firm hold. But within 2 hours, his hair became frizzy. He is a busy toddler, and I didn't want to use a ton of product in his hair to make the finger curls stay. So I threw his hair into a ponytail.

The remaining products: Tahitian Bay Detangling Conditioner, Curl Moisturizing Hair Cream, and Curlie Wurlie Kids Hair Cream. Worked just like the others. It soaks right into N's hair, and doesn't work for her curl type, or my sons. I recommend their product line for finer and thinner hair textures, maybe 1a-2b/c. But not for thick 3b/c-4 curls. We may not of had the best experience, but "No two heads are the same." So this may work for others. Also the price is more reasonable than many other natural hair care lines, and Rhee is so sweet.

-We will be giving away to 3 lucky winners (1) One Curls Of The World  product of their choice, each.

You can find Curls Of The World here: http://www.curlsoftheworld.com/index.html

Review: I really enjoy doing reviews that allow N and I to have quality time together. I must admit, I'm shamefully crafty-challenged. I've seen so many women/fellow bloggers creating beautiful handmade items. I couldn't help but to feel sad...sigh... But NOT anymore hahahaha! (-sings-) I can make a bow! I can make a bow! and it's all thanks to the Bowdabra bowmaker

I opened the box, and the first thought in my mind was, "oh my goodness, you are not crafty! What did you get yourself into!" I even asked our Facebook friends to wish me luck! I popped in the DVD, and I followed right along. Sandy's directions are so simple and easy to follow. It only took me a matter of  2-3 minutes to complete a bow. I stared at it, and was truly shocked! I ran to show N the bow, and she said " oh cool, I want to make one!" and it was on!!! I explained how to use it, and together we created a "Fold and Twist Bow" and then a "Double Fold and Twist Bow." Honey, we were on a roll! We were so into it, that we didn't realize the time, and it was a little past her bed time. The next day after school we continued making bows. Then she wanted to do it all by herself, she made 2 bows. Then I found some of our hair clips, and hot glued them to the back of her bow.

Here are the final results of our bows.

 (Made by me)

(Made by N) Not bad for a 7 year old

(I added a little bead with the letter N.)

The Bowdabra is the perfect DIY tool! Thanks so much Sandy we enjoyed reviewing the bowdabra! You can find the Bowdabra at their website http://bowdabra.com/

White/Gray Hair

This is not about adults with white/gray hair. But it's about N.
N has always been embarrassed about it, and fusses when I try to take a picture of it. She didn't want me to make a post about this, because she doesn't want (in her words) "for people to think that she is an old lady." So after a year of having this article, I decided it's time to air it all out. In hopes of helping someone who is going through the same thing. I received some advice back in 2010 from the members of the forum, including our friend Nik from BBB, who recommended for us to go to the pediatrician (thanks bbb.)

Here is a excerpt from my post:
Posted 05/06/2010
About 2 years ago ,my daughter was sitting on my mom's lap when she noticed, a long white hair growing from my daughter's hair. Well since then, she now has several white strands of hair in various spots in her hair. I was wondering is that typical for a 5 year old to be going gray? and will she have completely white hair by time she is 20, and If so should I dye it? I heard it could come from genetics (her dad had some grey strands, but now has cut all his hair off and is bald) and I have a few white strands (probably stress lol) also I heard it could come from, lack of vitamins ....IDK.... I just wonder if anyone was in the same boat?

-Please ignore the dye part lol, I did not create my blog then, nor did I know a thing about hair health lol- Oh but I wasn't going to dye her hair at the age 5, I meant when she is a older/teen.

Here are some pics of her gray strand, this by far is the hardest picture I had to take. This strand is almost clear! lol I took at least 9 pictures and its so hard to see. I placed the strand against my black mouse pad and still it's hard to see. Agghhh. I swear this strand was sitting back laughing at me while I'm trying to take a good clear picture.
-to enlarge the picture click on it-

After taking BBB's advice and talking to her doctor, she told me that this is normal in some kids due to genetics! -shocker- Then it all clicked, and I realized that my Mom went gray at 19. I noticed my first gray (hush I'm not old!) at 20, and my husband had his around 21. So then I asked my Grandma (before she passed) about it, and she mentioned that a few family members had that too as a child, and it's a symbol of wisdom lol. <--I believe that's one of her many old wives tales. Bless her soul, she had a ton of those! So instead of being embarrassed, I'm teaching N to not look at gray strands as an old lady, but to look at her gray strands, as wisdom!

- Have you ever seen a child with gray/white strands?

Product Review: Eli's Body Shop

Thanks Eli for allowing us to review your products!

We at Eli’s Body Shop are committed to providing organic and natural products to our customers around the world. Give us the opportunity to provide you with our unique services and solutions.

Organic Black Soap Shampoo

Black Soap Shampoo 275ml

Ingredients: Aqua, plantain skin, cocoa pod, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, shea butter, vegetable glycerine, castor oil, and chamomile.

Review: I always heard about all of the wonderful benefits of Black Soap. So I was super excited to wash with this! It has a nice light scent, not over powering (can't put my finger on it lol.) I love how this contains glycerine, this will really come in handy during the warmer months. The Black soap shampoo left her hair feeling very soft.  I really like how it worked up a good lather. A good lather to me, equals clean. This is not true, but in my mind, if I don't have a lather, I keep applying the product until I do lol. Black soap is known to help with eczema. So Moms who have kids with it, you should truly try this.

Organic Shea Oil
Shea Oil - Mango Papaya 150ml

Ingredients: Shea oil, coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, tea tree oil, jojoba oil, and mango papaya oil.

Review: I love love love oils!! and so does N's hair. It smells delicious, and fruity. I used a small amount on top of her moisturizer to seal it in. I recommend this for hair that likes thick oils, and for those who need to retain moisture. The shea oil adds a really nice shine to N's hair. I didn't add moisturizer the next day, her hair was still shiny. That's a A+ in my book.

Organic Black Soap Facial Cleaner

Organic Black Soap Facial Cleanser 150ml

Ingredients: Cocoa pod, plantain skin, coconut oil, aqua, shea butter, virgin vegetable glycerine, aloe vera, cucumber, green tea, and lime.

Review: I used this product for 4 days straight, and my skin felt AMAZING! I had a few pimples which I tend to get during "that" time of the month. (sorry for the tmi) and this stuff made them vanish! I told my Mom (big mistake) and she totally stole my bottle. Sigh. So since she stole it, I made her help with this review. In her words "Ohh Kay (my nickname) I love this stuff, My face is clearing right up. I want you to order your sister's some."...Well folks, it looks like I have to purchase some more for myself, and my siblings. Bottom line, if my Momma says it's a good product, then there is nothing more to say. Mom's are always right!

fyi: Im hiding the next bottle!
