N's school picture day was tomorrow. I decided to do a cute simple cornbraid design on the top of her hair, and use Curlformers on the back of her hair. That night, I cornbraided her hair, and then I sprayed her hair with water/conditoner. I added the setting lotion to her hair, and placed about 30 Curlformers in the back of her hair.
The next morning I woke N up, got her dressed for school. I took out 1 Curlformer, and guess what happened? Her curl dropped!!! Her hair was still WET!! I removed all of the Curlformers and only 2 curls looked right. Now, I had no clue what to do, and we only had 20 minutes to get out of the door. N became sad, because she wanted to look nice for picture day. So I did the one thing, that I never done before...I used a flat iron!!! (pause for dramatic effect) lol.
I have heard over, and over, again how heat is the Devil. But honestly, if you don't consistently do it, and use protection, there is nothing to worry about. N is 6 and she sits perfectly still, so I don't have to worry about burns. I whipped out the flat iron and heat protectant spray and got to work. We finished just in time. I didn't have time to flat iron the hair in the ponytail. So I made a quick two-strand twist, and she was out the door.. but not before I snap some pics!
Look how short her ponytail is compared to the rest of her hair, shrinkage is no joke!
3 slanted cornbraids, 2 down her edges, and smaller cornbraids going into a ponytail.
Hip or waist length?? I'm not sure what do you think?
She liked seeing her length, but she did not like her hair out. She came home complaining that her hair got wrapped around her bookbag, and some of her hair got tangled around her necklace. But worst of all, when she came home her hair was looking like Chaka Khan! Don't get me wrong, I love big hair, but that was not the look I expected. Trust me, her hair was EVERYWHERE. On the bright side her teacher gave her a semi-compliment (I guess)?? She said "Woo-Child, I can't imagine doing all of that, Bless your poor Momma". Ehh, I'll take it as a compliment. It may look like alot of work, but what she doesn't know is that, it only took under 20 mins (wink.)
Here is her School Picture :)
Have you ever flat ironed your child's hair? Was there any pro's or con's from going curly to straight?
So sad that you put all that work in with the curlformers for it not to work out. I have ha that happen soooo many times. :( But you made it work! The picture was gorgeous, her hair was cute, and she is beautiful! And that shrinkage is amazing! Love curly hair. :)
ReplyDeletethat is a lot of beautiful hair! i would say hip-length! and i would never dare send my baby to school with her hair flat ironed - it would be a poof in about 2 hours!!! i'm sure N's pictures will be beautiful
ReplyDeleteI thought about doing that for C's school pic, I didnt though. It takes me an hour to get her hair totally straight, and by going over and over her hair just burns it so bad! But I like this look for N- a nice change of style :)
ReplyDeleteMy 8 year old hair was flat iron by my sister who is also natural and it was pretty but i hate that my parents who were visiting from MS said to her "look how long and pretty your hair is, ask your to get you a perm so it can stay pretty and long" I was passed mad but just smile and ask her whats her favorite style and she said twists and frohawks ! She told them with flat hair she can have her favorite styles or look like her favorite book I like myself. I was so happy to hear that!
ReplyDeleteYour daughter has beautiful hair. My daughter is 5 with butt length hair and I started a year ago, flat ironing her hair 2xs per year just to trim her ends. Takes me 4 hours. It reverts right back once I shampoo it again. I always, always deep condition and use a heat protector.

Her hair is so beautiful! Her happiness is so much more important than her hair. I think you totally did the right thing :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Everyone!
ReplyDeleteI doubt I will flat iron again it was great seeing her length, but she didnt like the problems that came with it, also it didnt last very long. She got her hair wet that night, so her hair curled back up LOL.
Ouch, im sorry that happened to her. Her hair beautiful and I can only hope Princess hair get thats long. I think her hair is waist length. I hope you plan on sending me a photo lol
ReplyDeletethis post was funny because i could so relate! omg.
ReplyDeletebut ive had my daughter's hair flat ironed like 3 times...although it's easier to manage STRAIGHT. its definitely a waste of time bc soon as she goes out side..POOF! it frizzes and shrink again. i dont know what kind of product i would use to not make her hair do that.
n's hair is still cute and she is a cutie!
Her hair looks great!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have flat ironed Des' hair a few times before, depending on what I use as a heat protectant determines if it poofs up. I have been very fortunate not to have any long term effects from straightening it. Like N's hair is curls right back up once water hits it.
