Circle Braid/Beehive Style

This is my Circle/Beehive Braid, I wanted to make one continuous braid. I started in the back of her hair and ended in the middle. I didn't post the instructions because all I did was make one cornbraid throughout her hair. But if anyone has any questions, or want the instructions, feel free to email me at kandylandkurls@yahoo.com

Do you remember this flower? It's the wonderful flower that is from A Mother's Love Blog, she sells adorable handmade bows. N wanted me to clip the flower in the middle of the circle.

N's surprised face at Girl Scouts, she was shocked that I had a camera with me.

Essential Oils And Carrier Oils

Here is a breakdown of Essential and Carrier Oils. Each essential oils has it's specific use:
Lavender is great for soothing the scalp and calming the hair.
Chamomile is the most soothing of the essential oils for the hair and scalp. Chamomile helps to retract skin cells that have been inflamed from chemical procedures, the sun and helps with those that have scaly scalps in including a lot of white flakes or psoriasis.
Lemon Essential oil works well for a treatment for dry scalp, dandruff, lice, and under active sebaceous glands. The sebum on the hair is what keeps it from dry out. Curly hair tends to be more dry and can benefit from lemon essential oils. Be very careful to only use lemon on hair that is too oily as this can seriously dry out the hair after just one washing or rinse.
Peppermint helps to stimulate blood flow to the root of the hair. This helps the hair to receive proper nourishment and to grow correctly. Peppermint makes the scalp tingle and this is what stimulates the blood flow to the hair.
Rosemary essential oil works great for dry hair and dandruff as well as itchy scalp.
Tea Tree essential oils works to purify the scalp. It works extremely good for those that suffer from scalp psoriasis and scalp dandruff.
Always remember that you cannot use these essential oils directly on your hair, but you should mixed with carrier oils first.

Carrier Oils for Hair

Olive Oil: This oil can be combined with other nice smelling essential oils. Olive oil is especially beneficial for dry hair suffering from indoor heating and sun. The hair is nourished and will regain its elasticity after a treatment with this oil.
Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil is great for hair that is dry or damaged and it helps to moisturize and protect hair follicles against factors that cause hair loss.
Grape seed oil: massage the scalp with grape seed oil. It is believed that this oil stimulates hair growth.
Coconut oil: To have a beautiful, shiny hair and stimulate hair growth, give yourself a scalp massage with warm coconut oil once a week.
Castor oil: Castor oil stimulates blood circulation. More blood to the scalp, resulting in more nutrients and more hair growth. It is therefore very likely to be true what they say that with the castor oil hair grows faster and more plentiful.

Interview with Dominique-Alexis & Bunny From Natural-Hair-Care-Info.com

Thank you Kandy Land Kurls for the interview! Bunny and I really enjoy your creative styles, reviews and your entire blog actually.
1.) Your name and little one's name/nickname?
Dominique-Alexis & Bunny
2.) What’s your hair care routine?
Well I usually detangle, wash, condition, and style her hair on the weekends simply because it’s most convenient then. I do her styles to last at least a week, unless they’re twist outs or something, then it’s really up to the weather to how long they last. She is outdoors a lot so I won't be doing any twist out and down hairstyles for a while because the humidity is so bad here. I also try to alternate between protective hairstyles (which I like) and more creative hairstyles with beads (which she likes).

3.) What products are you currently using?
I really love Naked by Essations hair products. Their shampoo and conditioner is the best I have ever used, hands down. I don’t think they have a moisturizer and I’ve never really found one that I like, so I make my own for both of us and seal with peanut oil.

4.) Do you use (or will or will not use) heat/chemicals on the child's hair?

Under no circumstance will I or anyone be allowed to put chemicals in her hair until she’s old enough to make the decision for herself. And if she decides yes, I will let her know that I don’t agree with that choice, but it is her hair and I can’t really argue with that.
However, I have straightened Bunny’s hair once before. Her hair is very thick and long, so it took a long time. I won’t use heat on her hair again and this is why: she may be nine-years-old, but I don’t think she really understands what’s really happening. All she knows is that the heat makes it straight. She doesn’t understand that there may be side effects/breakage/damage, so until she’s old enough to understand that and make the decision rationally (whether it’s yes or no), I won’t be using heat on her hair again.
With all that said, I do blow dry her hair ON THE COLD SETTING once or twice a year to give her a trim. I do this so I don’t take off more than I anticipated.

5.) Do you use heat/chemicals on your hair?

I will never use a relaxer again but I do straighten my hair every six or seven months because I really do like straight hair. Yes, I love my natural hair, but every once in a while I do like to switch up from the twist outs, flat twists, and cornrows for a straighter style.

6.) What was the worst hair tip you have received?

Well there are two really bad ones I got. The first one being the old “cut your hair a lot and it’ll grow really fast” myth that’s been going around for decades. The second one was the greasing of the scalp. I used to do that every third day and wonder why my hair broke off in greasy hunks.

7.) Do you cut/trim the hair? If so how often?

Bunny has an actual regimen where she has a set time to style, wash, detangle, trim, etc, whereas I do what I feel like with my hair when I feel like it. I trim both of our ends as needed, which is anywhere between three and six months. It varies a lot. I just trimmed her hair last weekend actually and her hair looks a lot better.

8.) What is some hair advice you would like to share?

I guess it would just to have fun with your hair. That natural hair is a blessing is and absolutely beautiful. Make sure that you’re a role model to your natural children because it’ll be hard for them to love their curls if you don’t.

Show us the pictures!!!!!

Thank you so much for this lovely interview, your styles are out of this world. Bunny's hair looks so thick and healthy, I love it! Keep up the good work!

Blooper Star Style

I am not a professional hairstylist, I try my best to be creative. I wasn't going to post this hairstyle, but I said to myself "Hey, we all should be able to laugh at ourselves once in awhile." This is my first attempt of making a shooting star in her hair. I think it came out cute but as you can see, it came out resembling the star of david lol.

Here is a picture of the star of david
This is the star I was trying to make.

I stink at drawing stars on paper, but I'm determined to master this star! I will dust myself off and try again.

Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Product Review

I went to Walmart to buy some more Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner, when I noticed that Organix has a new product called Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo. I have heard a few great things about pure moroccan oil and how it's rare and helps your hair to grow. For only $6.00 dollars I decided to give it a try.

This rare formula has a centuries-old history of providing natural vitamin E and antioxidants while renewing your hair's cell structure, sealing in shine, and creating lush softness. A precious blend of Moroccan argan oil which instantly penetrates the hair shaft restoring shine and softness while strengthening. Derived from the southwest region of Morocco, argan oil protects from styling heat and UV damage while creating soft, seductive, silky perfection.

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Sodium C 14 16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Dimethicone Copolyol, Cocamide DEA, Glycol Distearate, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil (Argan), Cacao (Theobroma Cacao) Extract (Cocoa Butter), Parfum, Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut), Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado), Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Extract (Aloe Leaf), Panthenol, Polyquaternium 11, DMDM Hydantoin, Cetyl Alcohol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium

When I purchased this bottle, I didn't bother reading the back. I automatically assumed it is paraben-free and sulfate-free, like the other Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner. I was WRONG! It contains sulfates (bummer.) It has a nice pleasant smell (I can't put my finger on the scent) but it was decent. When I washed it out, N's hair felt moisturized still. Not completely stripped of all of her oils and brittle. That's the feeling I normally feel with sulfate shampoo (until I put in conditioner) but I didn't have that same feeling. While I was styling her hair, I instantly noticed how soft it was. This is a good shampoo to clarify N's hair, and I will use it when she has build up (possibly once a month). But Bee Mine Botanical Shampoo, Shea Moisture, and C Curls are the healthiest shampoos I have tried so far. I have learned my lesson, I will ALWAYS look at the ingredients before purchasing.

FYI: This shampoo does contain "cones" for those that don't like to use silicone's.

10 facts about N- Virtual Playdate

-This is not hair related, but N loves to see the pictures of your children. She says they are all her "Best Friends" and she wanted to share some things about herself to her friends in the blogger world. She would like to have an online/virtual playdate! 2.) When she grows up she wants to be an entrepreneur (seriously) she wants her own office, phone and a side-kick (which really means a personal assistant lol.) 3.) Favorite food is broccoli with melted cheese, and oranges. (not together lol)

4.) She is a perfectionist, from cleaning her room to school work. She gets really down if she makes a mistake.

Update: On Cornrow Styles With Zig-Zag Parts

Here is a quick update on N's Zig-Zag cornrow style, click here to view the original style.
I removed the rubberbands on the sides, because I really don't like to leave rubberbands, beads, or ponytail holders in her hair for more than a few days. I also removed the two braids in the back of N's hair, and this created a beautiful braid out. Then I sprayed a little bit of Bee Mine Juicy Spritz and she was good to go.

I wanted to show you N's shirt, if you are looking for clothing to promote natural hair for your princess. Come visit http://www.naturalhairwear.com/index.html to check out the wonderful selection that's available.
